Stellenbosch is almost synonymous with good wine and it's no surprise that this famous university town is where Ernie Els has chosen to open his brand new restaurant, The Big Easy, named after the man himself.
As you'd expect, The Big Easy places the utmost importance on serving great food and fantastic wine. There is a distinctly French influence and the emphasis is on using the finest, freshest ingredients to produce world-class food in this historic setting. The personally selected wines complement the menu. The Big Easy Restaurant opened on 1 December 2008.

Treat yourself to a picnic in the Camphor forest. Picnic baskets are available from the tennis pavilion at the Rose Garden. Begin with a delectable hors-d'oevre of butternut and leek quiche, Franschhoek salmon trout and grilled asparagus, served with zesty lemon mayonnaise and a traditional French-style baguette.
The main course, a chacuterie of Moroccan-spiced beef fillet, Coronation chicken salad with a mild curry sauce and peaches, and thinly-sliced Gypsy ham is served at your table on a hand-crafted pottery platter, with Dijon mustard on the side, and accompanied by a Niçoise-style potato salad, Waldorf salad bound in mayonnaise, and cucumber, gherkin, caper & fennel salad. This is followed by petite cheeses, biscuits and seasonal fruit.
For the perfect ending to your meal, indulge in caramelised Grabouw Granny Smith apple sponge and aromatic filter coffee.

The original cellar, a National Monument, has been converted and the kitchen is placed "front and centre", thus creating an ambiance that is relaxed but vibey. There is a proprietor/winemaker table in a private area between the cellars which can accommodate a maximum of 8 people. Pride is taken in the fact that time was taken with well known potter, David Walters, to create the crockery, handcrafted Riedel stemware was selected and Laguiole knives purchased, to give you an experience you won’t soon forget.
